Cajamarca: a reflection of history!
Cajamarca: a journey through history. Recognized for its climate, its cuisine and its beautiful colonial architecture and baroque, this city of the northern highlands boasts of having real cultural treasures. While Cajamarca has much to offer, this time we will focus on the historic Plaza de Armas, which is flanked by two beautiful churches: St. Catherine’s Cathedral (1682) and the church of San Francisco (1699), which presented an outstanding architecture. The first church can be recognized due to its lack of bell towers and because it was built in volcanic stone, inside it is possible to see vessels in gold leaf, while the second church offers inside stunning stained glass and carved wooden altars. The San Francisco church also keeps in its basement a set of catacombs, and a Museum of Religious Art in which you can see from the Cusco School, paintings, furniture and clothing that were of liturgical use.
