Cajamarca: a reflection of history!

Cajamarca: a journey through history.

Recognized for its climate, its cuisine and its beautiful colonial architecture and baroque, this city of the northern highlands boasts of having real cultural treasures.
While Cajamarca has much to offer, this time we will focus on the historic Plaza de Armas, which is flanked by two beautiful churches: St. Catherine’s Cathedral (1682) and the church of San Francisco (1699), which presented an outstanding architecture.
The first church can be recognized due to its lack of bell towers and because it was built in volcanic stone, inside it is possible to see vessels in gold leaf,  while the second church offers inside stunning stained glass and carved wooden altars.
The San Francisco church also keeps in its basement a set of catacombs, and a Museum of Religious Art in which you can see from the Cusco School, paintings, furniture and clothing that were of liturgical use.
TRACES OF THE PAST
A short walk from the Plaza de Armas is the famous rescue room, the only building that preserves original Inca ruins in the town and where Atahualpa spent his last days and sentenced to death by the Spanish, after paying a substantial fortune in order to fill twice with silver and once with gold the famous rescue room.
About two blocks from the square, you will find the stone steps that lead you to the viewpoint of Cerro Santa Apolonia, where you will find a small church dedicated to the Virgin of Fatima, and beautiful gardens, from where we can see a large part of the city.
On top of the viewpoint of Santa Apolonia are some vestiges of pre-Hispanic constructions such as the so called Inca chair, formed by a stone block and was carefully carved to give it its current form.
